The first exhibition of Kyogen, “KAMON EXHIBITION – The Affinity of Kamon and Art –“ was held in April 2018. “Usara” is Shoryu Hatobaʼs original three-dimensional artwork that was displayed at this event. This artwork includes 2,081 spherical balls made of local cedars from Yakushima island, and each of them has the smallest “Arakawa Grip” embedded inside to secure its position. Then, a total of 615 wires were used to hang them down. A plum flower appears when viewed from the front, while a cherry blossom magically emerges when rotated 90 degrees. This distinctive design that rediscovers the value of local Yakushima cedars was highly appreciated, and was awarded the Japan Wood Design Award 2018, “Special Award.” The name of “USARA” represents 3D artwork which displays different letters or motifs depending on which angle it is viewed from. Its unexpected combinations of motifs and the variety of materials it is made from amaze those who view it and create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere in the space.
